Introduction
As stated in the Cambridge dictionary, upskilling is “the process of learning new skills or of teaching
workers new skills,” while reskilling is “the process of learning new skills so you can do a different job, or of
training people to do a different job.”
Need of upskilling and reskilling
Digitalization has entered all the areas of organizations. As
the digitalization was implemented by the employees digitalization is
incomplete without transforming the human resources. Organization requires
their employees to have the relevant knowledge and capabilities to perform
their job role. So it is important to upskill and reskill the current workforce
to avoid any adverse effects to avoid the sense of job loss.
According to (Meena, Ganesan, 2020) “upskilling is the
process of upgrading the current skill set of the employees in a related role
to become even more valuable in their current role.” While “Reskilling is an
act of equipping the employees with essential skill to fit into a new role.”
Challenges in upskilling and reskilling
The day to day operations of an organization has assisted by
the integration of digital technology such as artificial intelligence,
automation, and robotics. This may result in displacement in some manual job
roles and it may lead to certain job roles could evolve into digital roles.
Reskill and upskill in Department of Animal Production and
Health
Department of Animal Production and Health is a government
base organization and it regularly provide their employees with required
training so employees could reskill and upskill their knowledge and
capabilities.
Conclusion
Reskilling and upskilling is an
ongoing process, and if employees aren’t stimulated and motivated to regularly
seek out opportunities to learn and develop, the organization as a whole won’t
do so, either.
But this doesn’t have to be a
chore. With the right tools, reskilling and upskilling can be an enjoyable and
rewarding practice. To fill the new configured digital roles, the organization
need new approaches for reskilling and upskilling current employees. Skill
shortage is the vital challenge faced by the human resource management. So the
organization need to increase investment in training programs. Organization need
to clearly identify the training need of the employees in certain criteria and
provide them training accordingly. Thus the organization has to upskill and
reskill their employees’ skill in their required domain through effective training.
