Rise of the Hybrid Workplace

 



Introduction

After emerging of the Covid-19 pandemic everything has changed completely. The whole world went into lockdown restrictions due to pandemic. Then the cooperate world has faced many challenges. This leads to whole new work arrangements such as work from home.

But some organizations work just doesn’t allow for a 100% remote work policy. However it requires some sort of balance between the two – working from home and working on station.

So the hybrid workplace concept has given a ray of hope to cope with this growing crisis.

A hybrid workplace is an arrangement where employees come to the office occasionally and depending on their convenience, the rest of the tasks done by working from home.

Organizations now recognize what most remote workers knew all along―that work can get done from anyplace. In fact, a recent Harvard Business Review article reported that knowledge workers believe they have been more productive at home during the pandemic because they have been able to “focus on what really matters.” In a recent Work Survey fielded by Wakefield Research on behalf of Service Now, 87% of employees said the new way of working was an improvement. (Teed, 2020)

The hybrid workplace has trigged the redesigning of office spaces based on the number of people at the office and capacity of the space under social distancing policies.

 

Advantages of hybrid workplace

  1.  Reduced cost of operation
  2. Increased productivity
  3. Enables distributed teams
  4. Helps employee financially

Disadvantages of hybrid workplace

      Decreased client experience
Increased employee isolation
Increased cyber risks
Difficulty maintaining productive routines

Conclusion

Without stressing employees, many organizations are implementing the hybrid workplace model to improve productivity. So the organization must understand the evolving work trends for better sustainability. This is going to be an inevitable condition for many organizations in the future.

  1. Hybrid work place came in to the subject mainly because of the pandemic. Whilst some industries can be performed this practice some can't such as apparel industry. Author has clearly explained the topic with linking some important references.

    As per the AAyat Alli 2017, with this hybrid work place employers are unable to see how their remote employees are interacting and connecting with their team members. My view is the biggest challenges of remote working is collaboration. With this hybrid work place it is hard working together and set processes to make choices that all members agrees.

  3. Long before the pandemic, we were familiar with distributed teams. Employees worked from multiple offices regionally or around the world. In recent years, some remote employees may also have worked from home. COVID-19 forced previously hesitant employers to accept work-from-home as an option, Truly hybrid environment is one in which employees have the option to work in-office or remotely, depending on their preference or the day’s needs.
